Raptorโœ“ Protected species

Falcon

Falco spp.

โœ“What to do NOW

  1. 1Approach slowly from behind โ€” raptors attack frontally
  2. 2Throw a thick towel or jacket over the bird to restrain its wings
  3. 3Grasp both feet simultaneously โ€” the danger comes from the talons, not the beak
  4. 4Place in a dark cardboard box with ventilation holes, lined with a rolled towel
  5. 5Keep in a cool, quiet place away from people and pets
  6. 6Call the nearest CRAS within 1โ€“2 hours
  7. 7Note: where it was found, its condition, and whether there were cables or nets nearby

โœ—NEVER do this

  • โœ—Do not handle bare-handed โ€” talons puncture skin and transmit serious bacteria
  • โœ—Do not give raw butcher meat โ€” it lacks calcium and vitamins and worsens the condition
  • โœ—Do not force-feed water
  • โœ—Do not expose to direct sunlight
  • โœ—Do not cage with other animals
  • โœ—Do not try to "straighten" wings or legs โ€” fractures must be set by a vet
  • โœ—Do not release before assessment: an injured raptor cannot survive in the wild

โš  Important note

In Italy, raptor deaths are often caused by: collisions with vehicles and power lines, lead poisoning (hunting ammunition in prey tissues), and illegal traps. Always report the circumstances of the find to the CRAS โ€” it may indicate a danger source that needs to be addressed.

โš– Legal protection

All falcon species are protected by the Birds Directive (2009/147/EC) and Law 157/1992. Disturbance, capture, and detention are criminal offences.
