Raptorโœ“ Protected species

Buzzard / Kite / Sparrowhawk

Buteo buteo / Milvus spp. / Accipiter nisus

โœ“What to do NOW

  1. 1Same procedure as for the falcon: cover with a towel, grasp the feet
  2. 2Check the keel (sternum): if it protrudes like a blade, the animal is severely malnourished
  3. 3Dark box with ventilation holes, towel on the bottom
  4. 4Contact CRAS immediately

โœ—NEVER do this

  • โœ—Do not feed raw meat
  • โœ—Do not attempt DIY fracture treatment
  • โœ—Do not leave exposed to open air โ€” hypothermia stress is lethal

โš  Important note

The red kite (Milvus milvus) is an at-risk species in Italy. Buzzards found on the ground often have collision fractures or second-generation rodenticide poisoning (brodifacoum). Report to the CRAS if found near farms or landfills.

โš– Legal protection

Protected by the Birds Directive and Law 157/1992. The red kite is listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive.
